Transcultural Research on Prognosis and Decision-Making
This key research priority investigates traditional techniques of prediction, attempts at coping with contingency, and processes of decision-making. Setting out from a primarily cultural-historical perspective, the associated researchers specifically address the question in how far the conceptual framework in which such techniques and practices are embedded varies in different cultural contexts, particularly in East Asia and medieval Europe. The related research activities center on the International Consortium for Research in the Humanities “Fate, Freedom and Prognostication. Strategies for Coping with the Future in East Asia and Europe” (IKGF).

Qānūn: Christian Society under Muslim Rule: Canon Collections from Medieval Spain
The establishment of Muslim rule over vast
parts of the Iberian Peninsula in 711 initiated a profound transformation of
the political, societal, and cultural conditions, which soon marginalized the autochthonous
Christian communities in Southern Iberia. The Christians in medieval al-Andalus
had to develop various strategies of acculturation to adapt to these changed
conditions.
The Islamic Law granted Christians a
protected but inferior legal status, allowing them administrative and juridical
autonomy in internal affairs. However, very little is known, so far, about the
practice of this inner-Christian self-government. Valuable insights are to be
expected from an extraordinary, yet hitherto rather neglected source: the unique
Arabic version of the Hispana Canon law collection, preserved in an 11th-century
manuscript from the Escorial Library.
The international research project
"Qanun" examines this law code as the normative basis of the communal
autonomy of the Christian minorities in al-Andalus. The focus will be both on
the legal contents of the collection as well as on the techniques of adaptation
and translation of Christian knowledge and tradition into the linguistic and
cultural codes of the dominating Islamic-Arabic elites in al-Andalus.
Womens Writing in French and Italian Literature of the 18th and 19th century
The main objective of the Action is to create a strong collaborative international Research Network and to produce a Road Map outlining future systematic collaborative research in European women's literary history. The historiography of literature needs renewal. In particular women's contribution to European literary practice can and must be accounted for in a much more adequate way than current literary histories do. The COST Action lays the foundation for an innovative European-scale approach to this problem. The neglect of women as cultural agents is indeed an international phenomenon, directly relating to gender inequality in modern society. International cooperation is needed in order to change things and demonstrate that women's growing presence, since the Middle Ages, prepared the way for their massive entrance into the literary field during the 20th century.
