As part of the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility program, the Chair of Early Modern History at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg welcomes Dr. Ümran Karadeniz from Manisa Celal Bayar University (Turkey) as a visiting scholar. The visit is hosted by Prof. Dr. Indravati Félicité-Hiltl and is dedicated to academic exchange on Ottoman social and legal history, women’s history, and cross-cultural perspectives on early modern societies.

During her stay in Erlangen, Dr. Karadeniz will participate in several seminars and discussions with students and faculty members. She will also offer a Blockseminar entitled “Ottoman Women: Wealth, Family, and Everyday Life” on Monday, 18 May 2026, from 12 to 2 p.m., in room C201 (Bismarckstraße 1, Erlangen).

In addition, she will give a lecture entitled “Cases of Violence Against Women in the Ottoman Empire” in the Oberseminar / Colloquium of the Chair of Early Modern History on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m., in room 1.059 (Kochstraße 4, Erlangen). All interested students and colleagues are warmly invited to attend.

The visit strengthens academic exchange between FAU and Manisa Celal Bayar University and contributes to the internationalisation of historical research and teaching at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology. Dr. Karadeniz’s work offers valuable comparative perspectives on questions of gender, law, property, family structures, and everyday life in the eighteenth-century Ottoman Empire.

About the scholar

Dr. Ümran Karadeniz is a historian at Manisa Celal Bayar University whose research focuses on the social and legal history of the Ottoman Empire, particularly in the eighteenth century. Her work draws extensively on Ottoman court records (şer‘iyye sicilleri) to explore women’s wealth, marriage practices, family life, charitable activities, and everyday social relations in Ottoman society. Her research also addresses topics such as clothing and material culture, intercommunal relations, and the legal position of women in the early modern Ottoman world.

Erasmus+ Staff Mobility

In addition to student mobility, the Erasmus+ program supports exchanges for academic and administrative staff. Its aim is to foster international cooperation, share best practices in teaching and research, and build sustainable institutional partnerships.
