Faculty

The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology faces the societal challenges of the present and the future with its research.
With about 10,000 students, it is one of the three major faculties of the FAU. Its research and teaching focuses on the humanities, social sciences and religion-related sciences. A specific feature is the responsibility of all departments within the faculty for teacher education.

Mission Statement of the Faculty: www.phil.fau.de/leitbild (in German)

Research

Research at the faculty takes place both individually and collaboratively. Key research priorities have been established to promote (inter-) disciplinary collaborative research.
In addition, interdisciplinary cooperation in interdisciplinary centers (IZ) and central institutes (ZI) is institutionalised.
Current research projects can be found at: www.phil.fau.de/projekte (in German)
An overview of publications can be found at: www.phil.fau.de/publikationen (in German)

Teaching and studying

Due to the wide range of disciplines, the faculty offers a great many degree programmes. In the bachelor programme, most of the subjects are studied in an almost freely selectable combination of two subjects (so-called “two-subject Bachelor”). The Master’s programmes follow either a disciplinary or a decidedly interdisciplinary approach. In addition, the faculty plays a significant role in FAU teacher training programmes. The course offer is partly supplemented by continuing education programmes.

The faculty in the region

The faculty is particularly marked by its professional diversity, which is reflected in the twelve departments, which are often divided into institutes. The facilities of the faculty are spread over locations in Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth.

First steps / Online platforms

In order to cope with everyday life, the use of certain online platforms is needed. Most platforms are available thanks to single sign-on (SSO) with the IdM identifier. The IdM ID is usually provided automatically. Linked to the IdM ID is also the FAU Card, which serves as a staff and library card, as an electronic purse and possibly for time registration.

Organisational units and levels

The faculty is divided into twelve departments, some of which are again divided into institutes; as a rule these correspond the “subjects”. All professorships (W1, W2 and W3) are assigned directly to the institute or department.
Accordingly, the system of ten-digit cost centers or organisational units (for example, 11 00 00 00 00):
The numbers 1 + 2 stand for the faculty, 3 + 4 for the department, 5 + 6 for the institute (if available). The digits 7 + 8 are used for a chair (W3), the digits 9 + 10, if it is a professorship (W2 / W1).
For planning and statistical purposes, the departments are also divided into teaching units. On the basis of this capacity, capacity utilisation and, if necessary, study places are calculated.
Fundamental to the organisation and organisational processes are the basic order of FAU and the departmental regulations of the faculty.
Basic order FAU: www.fau.de/grundordnung (in German)
Department regulations of the Faculty: www.phil.fau.de/departmentordnung (in German)
The members of commissions and committees at university and faculty level are usually elected by the faculty council for a term of two or three years.

Staff

In principle, staff can be financed either through budgetary or third-party funds. When employed via budget, the so-called re-employment blocks are to be observed; from (third-party) funds only temporary employment can take place. The faculty administration provides administrative support in personnel matters (eg call for tenders, recruitment, etc.).
For all questions regarding personnel matters, the responsible person in the human resources department (department P) is available, to be found at: www.verwaltung.zuv.fau.de/kontakt-personalabteilung/
All forms can be found in the FAU personnel manual: www.verwaltung.zuv.fau.de/personalhandbuch/ (in German)

Finances

For the distribution of the regular budget (title group [= TG] 73) and the funds from the expansion planning (TG 86), each professorship is independent and receives resources according to the FAU’s distribution model. In addition, each lesson receives literature according to the model adopted by the Faculty Council.
These funds are supplemented by study grants (TG 96), which are distributed to the teaching units according to the full-study equivalents.
In the case of third-party funds (TG 71, 72, 91, 92, 93 and 94), an infrastructure contribution is transferred:
in the case of DFG (TG 91 and 92), BMBF (TG 71) and EU funds (TG 93) in the form of the programme or project flat rate, of which 60% is claimed by FAU, 25% by the faculty and 15% by the recruitment agency;
for other third-party funds (TG 72 and 94), in the form of an infrastructure contribution of 20%, of which 75% is received by the FAU for central infrastructure costs and 25% for the faculty.
In addition, as far as possible, the faculty administration financially supports tutorials, excursions, lectureships, congress trips for junior scientists and has set up a programme for the start-up funding of research applications.
For initial funding of applications for third-party funding, Unit H1 provides up to € 2,500 per application: https://www.fau.eu/research/services-for-researchers/funding-for-applications/
The faculty promotes bi-national promotions by assisting with travel expenses. The international office offers advice (application form)
