Writing with the Phoenix Stylus

Date: 6 July 2025Time: 18:00 – 19:30Location: Katharinensaal, am Katharinenkloster 6, Nuremberg

The DFG Centre for Advanced Studies Alternative Rationalities and Esoteric Practices
from a Global Perspective (CAS-E) invites you to:

The “writing with the phoenix pen” is still very widespread in Taiwan and parts of China to this day. A religious temple community requests a message from a saint. The saint “descends into the stylus” and authorizes a medium to write characters in a container of sand, ashes or on a tabletop. These characters form the saint's message, which either serves the moral renewal of humanity or contains answers to questions from individual members of the congregation. For the first time, a “phoenix congregation” from Taiwan will perform its ritual publicly in Germany.
