Effects of steroid hormones, personality, and interaction processes on status acquisition in small groups - Prof. Dr. Lars Penke
Von der Georg August University Göttingen
Abstract: Steroid hormones such as testosterone and cortisol, as well as agentic personality traits such as extraversion have been implicated in social status attainment. I will present results from two large laboratory studies that assessed perceived and objective social status after discussions in groups of 4 to 6 unacquainted same-gender individuals. In the Personality in Groups (PinG) Study (N = 449), we found that extraversion predicted status attainment, partially mediated by having a more variable, louder voice, a greater speech ratio, and receiving more social attention. However, contrary to our predictions, testosterone reactivity, baseline cortisol levels, and their interaction where not implicated in this process. We also found that more extraverted individuals received more, but did not disproportionally benefit from, receiving more social attention during the group discussion, which explained why they experienced higher positive affect after the interaction. In the Göttingen Testosterone Administration (GTA) Study (N = 437), testosterone levels that were experimentally increased via transdermal administration did not facilitate social status acquisition or status-relevant dominance or prestige behaviours compared to placebo. There were also no moderation effects of gender, baseline cortisol, or agentic personality traits like extraversion, dominance, or narcissism. I will discuss these results in the light of relevant theories from evolutionary and social psychology, as well as other recent failed replication attempts in the behavioural endocrinology literature.
