Language and identity in the Māori world (Matiu Workman, University of Otago, New Zealand)
This session will explore what it means to be someone in te ao Māori (the Māori world), where identity is constituted through relationship to land, ancestors, and community rather than individual selfhood. Using the pepeha, a traditional Māori oral form of introduction, as a literary text, we will examine what it reveals about personhood, time, and belonging, and set it alongside Western autobiographical forms.
