From 14.-16. In February 2018, an international conference in cooperation with the University of Bern on “Apocalyptic Otherness: ‘They are Gog and Magog, gathered together for Battle’. Scyths, Arabs, or the US Army? “will take place in the Philosophical Seminar Building PSG III. The conference is funded by the DFG and organized by the FAU Chair of Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies on one, and by the Interdisciplinary Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies Erlangen (IZEMIR) on the other hand. The conference hosts internationally top-level scholars and will deal with the biblical origins of the Gog-und-Magog motif, its reception in early Christian literature and medieval exegesis, as well as its further literary development in the Occident. The history of reception will be compared with the development of this apocalyptic motif in oriental and Islamic traditions. From antiquity to the Middle Ages to the present, the conference offers insights into the perception of apocalyptic otherness in different cultures and religions.
