In the ranking of the ‘Top 50 Start-ups’ 2021, mentalis has reached fourth place. Launched in 2018, the company offers digital follow-up care after (partial) inpatient treatment for mental illnesses and is a spin-off of the chair of Psychology I at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology.

The ranking is based on scores from 170 start-up competitions and was compiled by F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA, a specialized publisher of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

What makes mentalis so special?

When people are discharged from psychiatric or psychotherapeutic institutions, follow-up care is often not ensured. This is due to a deficit in the German healthcare system: the demand for therapy placements for mental illness exceeds the supply. As the first German E-Health developer, mentalis provides patients with seamless, digital follow-up care and in doing so bridges gaps in healthcare. The company offers digital follow-up programmes for a multitude of psychotherapeutic needs:

  • Alcohol abuse
  • Depression
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia)
  • Training of emotional competence

Algorithm-based therapy apps and psychological videocalls stabilize the therapy successes achieved in inpatient care, and, if needed, transition patients to follow-up treatment in standard care. Mentalis thus follows a blended-care approach which combines digital medical products with video calls with certified psychologists. Mentalis seamlessly continues clinical treatment, as it is technically and procedurally integrated into the hospital discharge process. Due to the sign-up procedure at the clinics and the intelligent algorithm, follow-up care is as patient oriented as possible. Thus, the high rehospitalisation rate of F diagnoses can be reduced, complex follow-up treatments can be avoided, and the individual suffering of patients can be reduced. A win-win-win for the entire healthcare system.

The effectiveness of the mentalis programmes has been proven in multiple clinical studies and thus offers the highest degree of quality for patients. As a FAU spin-off, the scientific nature as well as the continuous improvement of mentalis care concepts are of the greatest importance.
