The programme “Geisteswissenschaften International” (Humanities International) has presented “Theoderich der Große“ (C. H. Beck 2018), written by Prof. Hans-Ulrich Wiemer, Chair of Ancient History (Alte Geschichte), with an award. Costs for a translation into English will be covered with around 25,000 Euro. Yale University Press will publish the English edition in spring 2023. The Faculty congratulates on this award!

The “Geisteswissenschaften International” award for the funding of translations of publications of the humanities

Twice a year, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the VG WORT Science Fund and the Federal Foreign Office award prizes for outstanding works in the humanities and social sciences and finance their translation. In spring 2020 a total of 14 works in the humanities will benefit from translation funding.

The aim of “Geisteswissenschaften International” is to contribute to the worldwide dissemination of research results in the humanities from Germany and at the same time to preserve and promote the status of German as a language of science and the language of the first publication of works in the humanities. Translation funding is intended to increase the number of licenses issued in the English-speaking world and to maintain the possibility of continuing to publish academic work in German.
